Scottish Conservative chief whip Stephen Kerr compared the SNP National Treasurer to American businessman PT Barnum, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes.
Mr Kerr said: “PT Barnum would have been proud of this spiel from Colin Beattie.
"Huge question marks remain over the SNP's finances, with members asking where their money went.
"The Nationalists are going to use public money to promote another divisive referendum.
“And the deputy First Minister has admitted his government are thinking about that, rather than pandemic recovery.
"Now, they are shaking the bucket for yet more money for an unscrupulous, nebulous taskforce, backed by the resources of the Scottish government."

A UK Government source said: “This is a clear sign the SNP are fearful of our tough opposition to a second independence referendum.
“As we have made clear, now is not the time for a divisive vote when we are trying to rebuild after the pandemic.”
In response, an SNP spokesperson said: “As our latest accounts confirm, the SNP is in great financial shape as we prepare to secure independence after the COVID crisis has passed.
"By contrast, no one knows where the Scottish Tories get cash or what they spend it on as they don’t even publish accounts.”
